Artist-Naturalist

Best known for the distinctive style of his dioramas at the American Museum of Natural History and other museums, Francis Lee Jaques was also a painter and illustrator whose elegant black-and-white drawings appeared in over 30 books about wildlife and nature. This book, a biographical essay illustrated with his own drawings and paintings, is a lucid examination of his work within the context of American nature painting. In his foreword, Roger Tory Peterson says, “His dioramas and canvases are a sensitive and joyous celebration of the wild world - a record of the way it was in his time.”

Published in association with the James Ford Bell Museum of Natural History, University of Minnesota.
